After the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021, Sony Pictures has kept its attention on the universe it has created for the Spider-Man character. While Tom Holland's Peter Parker/Spider-Man is working within the MCU, Sony's pocket of the multiverse is expanding the webslinger's comic book roster. Morbius is the second Spider-Man nemesis or anti-hero to receive the live-action, standalone treatment after Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021). Leto's Morbius predates the future Kraven The Hunter and Madame Web movies and coexists with Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock/Venom. There have been easter eggs in several Morbius trailers, such as references to Venom, Spider-Man graffiti, Oscorp, the Daily Bugle, and even Michael Keaton's Adrian Toomes/Vulture.
Daniel Espinosa stated that Morbius exists in the same reality as Venom during a Twitter Q&A with Cinemablend. In addition, the director confirmed that Spider-Man does exist in that reality. He will not say which Spider-Man, though. Even so, he did say that viewers would find out in due time.
The Spider-Men from No Way Home were introduced into Holland's reality by Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. The movie's webslingers, played by Garfield and Maguire, as well as Venom in the post-credits scene, were all returned to their own universes at the conclusion. With the advent of the Marvel multiverse, any Spider-Man might exist in the Morbius/Venom universe, including or excluding the characters played by Garfield and Maguire. While the aforementioned Spider-Man graffiti misled many into thinking Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man would appear, Sony most likely filled the Morbius trailers with deceptive easter eggs to give fans a variety of alternatives in the future.Nevertheless, Garfield's inclusion in Sony's updated Spider-Man Universe has been strongly supported by fans, and the actor appears open to returning for the appropriate project.
